That's now 258 competitive games with FC Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong after he played against Villarreal in the Liga matchday 37 fixture at the Estadi Olímpic. This means the blaugrana midfielder has surpassed Patrick Kluivert for the third most appearances by a Netherlands player for the Club.
Joining Barcelona
Frenkie de Jong joined the blaugranes in summer 2019 aged 22 years old from Ajax, where he had been a key player. He showed he was here to play in his first season at the Club, featuring in 42 games, scoring two goals and providing two assists, starting 36 of those games.
A fixture for Flick
He has since made a further 216 appearances, including this latest match against the Yellow Submarines, scoring 17 goals and providing 18 assists. As such, he has a total of 19 goals and 21 assists while wearing the Barça jersey. Under Hansi Flick this season he has played 45 games, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
Koeman in his sights
One of the first team captains, his total of 258 appearances surpasses Patrick Kluivert (257). He is unlikely to stop there though, as his next target is only six more appearances ahead – Ronald Koeman, his coach for the 20/21 and 21/22 season, who sits in second place for appearances (264). Phillip Cocu is in first place, with 292 appearances for Barça, so it is quite feasible that Frenkie de Jong could surpass his total next season.
